"Fishhead" by Irvin S. Cobb

I found this tale in an old Alfred Hitchcock short story collection and it amazed me. Cobb has largely been forgotten, it seems--and I'm not sure how often he dabbled in the horror genre("Fishhead", written in 1913, might have been the only instance)--but it's difficult to read this story and believe that Cobb did not have some influence on Lovecraft.
Does anyone else know of any other horror stories written by Cobb?

A really strange feeling came over me as I read it...it was like discovering a missing link, and it was a great story besides!

Well, a lot of Cobb's stuff is back in print now, but he was primarily a humorist in the style of Mark Twain(who also wrote the occasional gruesome tale, of course). I'd love to be able to browse through a collection of his short stories to get a feeling for them before I bought a volume sight unseen on amazon.com.

I don't know why I never sought out Lovecraft's essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature" before now, but it does contain a reference to Irvin Cobb's story "Fishhead":
"Still further carrying on our spectral tradition is the gifted and versatile humourist Irvin S. Cobb, whose work both early and recent contains some finely weird specimens. 'Fishhead', an early achievement, is banefully effective in its portrayal of unnatural affinities between a hybrid idiot and the strange fish of an isolated lake..."
[Lovecraft was, unfortunately, an avowed racist and his language here cannot be excused.]

You could always sell the book back thru Amazon.com if you found you didn't like it or donate it to a library. Or you could check out your local library, read the stories, or have them buy the book/stories so you can read them.
